Session details

Session title: Being well at your desk (and beyond) – practical accessible bitesize activities to support your life-work balance

By: Annertech Account Manager Karen Leech

Where: Room 6 (122-123)

When: Thursday, 26 September 2024 from 2.15pm to 3pm (CEST)

Annertech is a Platinum sponsor for 2024’s DrupalCon in Barcelona

Karen Leech is one of four Annertechies who will be presenting at DrupalCon Europe 2024. Her session is a bit of a departure from the usual topics on the programme. It’s called: “Being well at your desk (and beyond) – practical accessible bitesize activities to support your life-work balance.”

Karen is an account manager at Annertech. But she is also a shiatsu practitioner and yogi, and leads an active lifestyle in rural France – kayaking, biking and walking in the beautiful countryside she calls home.

Now she combines her knowledge of both working at a desk for hours on end and teaching others to exercise gently to bring DrupalCon Barcelona an exciting new session aimed at helping people incorporate movement into their daily routines.

“Movement, exercise and screen breaks are so important, but do we do them? Probably not as much as we should,” says Karen, who is a shiatsu practitioner and is completing her yoga teacher training.

“I know first-hand how difficult it can be to get moving when you’re trying to complete a task or beat a deadline. That’s why I will be sharing activities that can fit in your schedule at or near your desk!”

Karen will demonstrate entry-level, bitesize activities, and offer modifications for anyone needing them. You won't be working up a sweat – normal clothes are fine. However, keep in mind that restrictive clothing could hinder your movement. No equipment is required, except you and your chair. And ideally a bottle of water – hydration is fundamental to wellbeing.

“Even though I lead an active life, I live with some chronic conditions (chronic pain and HSD Hyper-mobility Spectrum Disorder) so I understand the struggle to get up and moving some days. Some days I don't feel like exercising. Some days I forget. I'm human. There is no judgement or expectation here. The goal is to enjoy it and maybe get a bit of motivation to move a bit more, especially on those days when you just feel a bit low,” says Karen.

What to expect

  • Six bitesize movements will be explained and demonstrated. Each set of movements is about five minutes and is delivered within an easy to remember framework to enable each set to be done independently at your desk and beyond.
  • There is an assumption that you will be seated, however all exercises can be done in whatever position is available to you.
  • As mentioned, modifications will be offered to support you to work safely and therefore effectively; you are also welcome to not take part in a set if it doesn't feel right for you.

If you’d like to chat to Karen before or after the session you can track her down at our booth in the exhibition area (Annertech is a Platinum Sponsor of DrupalCon Europe).
