The Orange Brand Site is an impressive repository that allows French telecommunications company Orange to streamline its brand and messaging across all the countries in which it operates.

Users of the site can upload or download digital assets that are available to all of the various communities within Orange.

The Brand Orange site was initially developed to ensure “Orange” is synonymous with “innovation and clear messaging”.

Brand.orange.com has two clear purposes:

  1. Bring the disparate communities who use the Orange brand together
  2. Tight integration with, and a brilliant search experience for, the Digital Asset Management system

Annertech’s Director of Technology Alan Burke led the team who worked on this project. His presentation at DrupalCon is titled: “Orange – Using Drupal to Foster Communities Around an External Digital Asset Management System”.

“Brand.orange.com is tasked with bringing a broad set of users together, and giving them the tools they need to tell the Orange story in a coherent and consistent manner. We’ll explain how we used Drupal’s community tools to achieve this,” says Alan.

All of Orange’s thousands of digital assets are stored and maintained in a third-party Digital Asset Management system called MasterMedia. Alan will discuss how the Annertech team integrated with this system to deliver the powerful search interface required for the project.

Key Topics

  • Using Layout Builder to integrate with an existing design system
  • Using the Group module to facilitate communities within Orange
  • Leveraging Drupal’s custom APIs to facilitate different registration flows for external and internal users
  • Building a custom React frontend for the DAM using a third-party API, while still using Drupal’s user management to maintain access control across the assets

“Drupal’s Layout Builder is powerful, and it can be extended to facilitate fine-grained access control,” says Alan.

“I’ll also be discussing when it makes sense to use Drupal’s Search API, and when it is more practical to leverage front-end tooling. I’ll let you in on some of the lessons we learnt and also the practicalities of dealing with third-party APIs.”

In order to get the most out of this session, attendees should have an appreciation of the challenges of Community Building within a multinational organisation and some familiarity with Digital Asset Management systems and the obstacles faced when pushing their capabilities to the limit.
